Were Marvel Studios right to use Evan Peters as Quicksilver in WandaVision?

Easily the most controversial aspect of WandaVision was revealing that Evan Peters’ recast Pietro was none other than Agnes’ (Kathryn Hahn) husband Ralph Bohner. While being a funny reveal, it is hard for fans to shake off the fact that Marvel Studios did anger a large portion of the fan base. This is because many had an expectation that the Pietro that first appeared at the end of episode 5 was going to be the same that appeared in the Fox X-Men universe. But, the theories fans had regarding this had no context, they were all speculation. Mutants haven’t even been introduced into the MCU and for a dramatic event like a crossover between the X-Men to occur in a story about Wanda’s grief wouldn’t have been successful to the story being told. As such if we take the speculation out regarding Evan Peters’ character being the same from Fox and Marvel then the use of him as the ‘recast’ Pietro was well executed.

What we have to remember is that the story being told in WandaVision was never about mutants, it was fundamentally about Wanda’s grief. Therefore, if we look at Pietro’s arrival without any thoughts of a crossover then there would be no issue about his reveal.

Also, we have to assume Marvel Studios would have expected many to theorize about the crossover and for this reason using Evan Peters worked in their favour. While the arrival of a ‘recast’ Pietro worked for the story, it was the use of Evan Peters that helped drive the speculation about who he could be. If ‘Fietro’ was a different actor then the excitement would not have been the same, thus casting Evan Peters will have been a conscious effort to keep fans guessing about the mystery of Westview. The mystery did only last one episode as well, looking back on episode 6 where Pietro featured heavily, it was clear that he wasn’t from the X-Men universe and for a drastic reveal like that would have taken away from the story. Could Marvel Studios have actually pulled off a crossover like this anyways?

I am just a guilty as every fan for getting over excited about Evan Peters in WandaVision, but what needs to be said is that I was not angry about the reveal like many others. Fans getting angry at the reveal obviously had no interest in the story being told.

If you are a true fan of the MCU then you would have like me appreciated the role in which Evan Peters played. The casting was a stroke of genius and helped build the intrigue into the show. Then when the secrets of Westview start to become clearer it was clever by Marvel to not overcomplicate their story by introducing a whole new dynamic into their universe. For one there is no way a crossover would work and secondly once again the crossover would have taken away from the story.

Revealing that Pietro was in fact Ralph also helped the story as it tied up questions fans were having. Two characters used as red herring turned out to be the same person just under Agatha’s spell which actually further plays into the story that Agatha was always behind it. This is what fans keep missing! The ending of the seventh episode literally spelt it out for us that it was ‘Agatha All Along’ yet fans still grasped onto a theory which if executed wouldn’t have done any justice to any of the characters involved.

As I keep reviewing the casting of Evan Peters, I can’t come up with any negatives from this. He was always designed to build intrigue which no other actor could have done to the same level, Marvel had never said a mutant crossover was coming and most importantly the strength of the story takes away any frustration fans are having about the red herring. It also has to be said that the name of Ralph Bohner was also hilarious looking back on it!
