Although Vision (Paul Bettany) is ‘dead’, we are witnessing him discover the truths of Westview. Beginning in episode 3 we have seen Vision start to question what is going on and this grew during episode 5 to the point where Vision confronted his wife Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) about everything he has learnt. We know Vision is an intelligent and powerful being which is why as he continues to learn of the secrets in Westview, he will become the key to the finale of the series.

Throughout episode 5 we began to see the separation between Wanda and Vision as they begin to drift apart. This began with arrival of nosy neighbour Agnes (Kathryn Hahn). Agnes arrived to help put the twins to sleep, but after Vision was slightly overprotective of the twins, Agnes broke the fourth wall and asked Wanda if she should “take it from the top”. Just as confused as viewers, Vision asked Wanda about what Agnes had done. Wanda just played it off as a joke. Nevertheless if it wasn’t for the fact the twins stopped crying then Vision would have continued to question Wanda. Immediately the episode set up Vision to eventually be the one that learns the truth of Westview.

Agnes becomes a cause of concern for Vision during the episode again. Interestingly Vision is prepared for a guest when the twins find a puppy. This guest turns out to be Agnes, which suggests subconsciously Vision knows that Agnes is poking around a little too much than she should be because he was ready for her arrival. He also questions why Agnes arrives as he notices she brings the exact item they need. Clearly Vision is noticing something is wrong and he develops suspicions for Agnes.

Moreover, Wanda uses her powers right in front of Agnes, which is something the couple promised to never do. Vision confronts Wanda about this saying they are “usually so much of the same mind”. We can tell that Vision is starting to drift away from Wanda as their thoughts start to differ from each other and the common trend of this occurring is Agnes. As Vision continues to learn about Westview we can expect Vision’s suspicions of Agnes to continue, potentially leading to him questioning her instead of Wanda. This could come true because the suspicions have come from Vision’s subconscious, this for Vision is something hard to ignore as he was designed to solve problems just like this even if he doesn’t know that.

At his place of work, Computational Services Inc, Vision continues to learn the truth of what is happening in Westview. This time he discovers that it is his wife Wanda behind everything, or at least that’s what he thinks. After an email is received by Norm (Asif Ali) from S.W.O.R.D. Vision once again senses something is wrong. He then uses his powers to unlock Norm’s suppressed personality. In doing this Vision learns that someone is controlling the minds of everyone in Westview, which he assumes to be Wanda.

This scene is also important because Vision discovered this without any influence by Wanda. Whenever Vision started to ask questions in the past Wanda was always there to either cut backwards or to tell him nothing is wrong. For the first time in the series Vision discovers something by himself and has nobody impacting his thoughts. This means that Vision won’t forget what he learns, so he will always know something is wrong allowing for him to properly discover what is happening in Westview without Wanda influencing him.

With the bombshell that episode 5 left us with; many fans have forgotten the importance of Vision’s discovery and his confrontation with Wanda before Evan Peters Quicksilver appeared. The encounter between Wanda and Vision was not only the first time the couple have argued but it was also the first time in the series that Wanda couldn’t control Vision. Despite Wanda trying to go to bed and even playing the credits, Vision persists with his questioning of Wanda. Without any influence from Wanda, Vison can finally begin to act how he wants to and finally get to the bottom of what’s going on. We also learn why Vision wants to learn what’s going on and it isn’t necessarily for everyone else’s good.

As Vision becomes more and more angry with Wanda he asks what is outside of Westview and that he doesn’t remember his life before they moved into the town. For the first time we see Vision reveal that he wants to find out what’s going on for his own memory. This is an important moment as for once Vision is mainly acting for the good of himself, meaning that he won’t stop in trying to unlock his past because his subconscious won’t allow him to. So, eventually we can expect Vision to find out the truth behind Westview.

Episode 5 of WandaVision not only provided the biggest bombshell in the series thus far but it also developed the character of Vision. The relationship between Wanda and Vision has never been as torn and Vision is beginning to learn about everything in Westview. With Vision no longer being influenced by Wanda then he can begin to act of his own will. This will only lead to him searching for answers more than ever before, which makes how he continues in the series important as the reality of Westview inevitably breaks.
