After the passing of Chadwick Boseman, a legacy has been left behind in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With that in mind, Marvel Studios are in a difficult place with the Black Panther character and the great nation of Wakanda. The studio is not going to recast T’Challa and director Ryan Coogler has stated writing the Black Panther sequel is one of the hardest jobs he has ever had. Along with this, Coogler’s company Proximity Company has signed an exclusive 5 year deal with Disney to develop television series. This news paralleled the announcement that a Disney+ exclusive series is in the works based on the Kingdom of Wakanda. Possibilities are endless for the African nation and there are so many stories that can be explored. We have come up with 6 potential shows that could be produced based on Wakanda which can carry on the legacy Chadwick Boseman gave us.

History of Wakanda:

One of the most intriguing parts of the Black Panther movie was the history lesson we received on Wakanda. After a Vibranium meteorite hit nation the 5 tribes of Wakanda waged war to gain control. However, after the 1st Black Panther emerged after taking The Heart-Shaped Herb, 4 of the Wakandian tribes agreed to peace and allowed the Black Panther to be king. The Jabari tribe didn’t agree to this and isolated in the mountains.

All of this history was given to us in a 2 minute scene at the start of the movie. 2 minutes is no way near enough to fully explore the rich history of Wakanda. Therefore a series focusing on the first Black Panther could further develop fans knowledge of Wakanda while also providing a new story to explore within the MCU. Understanding what each tribe stands for would also be interesting to explore and a more brutal Jabari tribe would provide the context to why they are feared in the modern day.

Also, this series would be set in a time period that hasn’t been explored in the past. As such there is potential for this time period’s story to continue and potentially expand into multiple series. Due to happening millions of years ago there would be no effect on the main time period which allows for greater creative freedom. New character can be introduced and our appreciation and understanding of Wakanda can expand more than ever.

Jabari Tribe:

One of the stand out characters from the Black Panther movie was the leader of the Jabari tribe, M’Baku (Winston Duke). Known as the mountain tribe, the Jabari do not follow the traditional Wakandian customs. They refuse to use Vibranium and also worship the gorilla god rather than the panther god.

Knowing what we know about the rouge tribe it would be interesting to explore an independent story based on the tribe. After helping in the battles against Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and Thanos (Josh Brolin) the Jabari look to have turned over a new leaf. However, what if a new up and coming tribe member disagrees with the direction M’Baku has been taking the tribe and wants to see a return to the traditional ways the tribe lived.

A potential split could be an interesting avenue to explore and provide even more context for the mountain tribe. Introducing new characters from the tribe would also add more depth to the characters within Wakanda as the nation continues to grow within the MCU.

Wakandian War Dogs:

War Dogs from Wakanda are the central intelligence service that has the role of maintaining the safety of their nation. The Black Panther movie explored how members of the War Dogs would learn about how African people were treated outside of Wakanda and would want to help. This was one of the main motivations behind Killmonger’s plan as Wakanda didn’t want interference.

As such a series exploring a section of the War Dogs and there struggle between helping those in need and their role for Wakanda would be an interesting and complex story to explore. Unlike most MCU content this series would be serious and routed in racial issues.

Like Black Panther, shows based on Wakanda have the potential to tackle racial issues in society and a complex story about the War Dogs would do just that. The time the show is set in could be anytime as well which allows the series to look into any period where racial issues were at a peak. Taking a look at the War Dogs during the American Civil Rights movement would be a perspective intriguing to watch. Opposing War Dog members could take sides, with some siding with the peaceful Martin Luther King and others who want to see more change siding with the more radical Malcom X.

Nakia:

One of the War Dogs we were introduced to was the lover of Black Panther, Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o). As a War Dog she would look to help those who faced persecution and she believed that Wakanda should do more to help. Nakia is someone with strong morals and will always do the right thing even if it means going against her orders.

Therefore an independent series following the adventures she embarks on would be an interesting series to explore. We would see multiple sides to Nakia in the series as she can show off her spy, fighting and diplomatic skills. Being a War Dog the series could take place in any country and the thus the story can be unique and not cause problems in Wakanda.

Moreover, a series focusing on Nakia would follow the trend that the MCU is moving in by presenting strong female leads. A female of colour would further continue this and shine a light on the diversity within the MCU more than ever before.

Ulysses Klaue:

ree

A major Black Panther villain in the comics Klaue (Andy Serkis) was a bit of a let-down in the MCU. Introduced during Avengers: Age of Ultron, we only got to see the mercenary in one other movie, Black Panther, which he was killed in by Killmonger. Being such a big villain to Black Panther it would be interesting to explore more of his story before his death.

It was teased that in the past there was a rivalry between the previous Black Panther T’Chaka and Klaue which explains how Klaue managed to access Vibranium. A series focusing on Vibranium and Klaue’s mission to retrieve it would be a cool new dynamic to focus on in Wakanda, especially with Andy Serkis as its lead.

Potentially the series could go into a different direction and let Klaue lead an adventure of his own. Klaue has been revived in the comics, so a series whereby Klaue is alive in the modern day can potentially allow for a villainous adventure which would add more context to those who wish to expose Wakanda for all of its secrets.

Dora Milaje:

ree

Being the personal bodyguards to the Black Panther while operating as elite operatives there is so much that can be explored in a series about the group lead by Okoye (Danai Gurira). Focusing on the Dora Milaje would allow a female group to shine and also explain more of traditional Wakandian customs.

With Okoye starring, the series would be filled with action as the group prevents plots against Wakanda. What could also be explored due to the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman is how the group operate with no Black Panther to protect. A new focus of the group where they instead protect the people and stop terrorist actions against the nation would be a new and exciting way to take the group.

Also, with the group being a collective of females the potential to include Nakia and Shuri (Letitia Wright) is there. A series highlighting the strengths of black women would be both empowering and exciting to watch. As such a series based on the missions the Dora Milaje embarks on would be just what a Wakandian Disney+ series is all about.
