Falcon and The Winter Soldier is less than 24 hours away and we are excited to see how Marvel Studios continue the legacy of Captain America’s (Chris Evans) shield. Trailers have suggested that they may be a clash between Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and the man known as John Walker (Wyatt Russell) as they tussle for who will be the next Captain America. John Walker is new to the MCU but has a rich history in the comics which makes his introduction in Falcon and The Winter Soldier exciting to witness.

The basics of his character:

With a rich history in the comics, John Walker is someone which has a clear connection with Captain America and the values he stands for. Like Cap, Walker has been enhanced but where the difference between the pair comes began when Walker publically disagreed with the values that Captain America stood for. Naturally the pair would clash about their disagreement, but Walker was never a true villain, rather an anti-hero.

Walker also took the mantle of U.S. Agent which he has kept ever since. He came to receive the mantle when he began working for government agencies. The number of agencies and groups Walker has worked for is vast and has also made him look like a soldier ready to follow orders, even though he has his own strong values.

What also has to be mentioned about Walker is his personality. While working for agencies and having a tendency for doing what is right, he still has a brutal side to him which made him unfit to take the mantle of Captain America. Also, his personality has been racist at times as he is very dismissive towards people of a different race.

Will this transition into Falcon and The Winter Soldier?

With a basic understanding of what John Walker is like in the comics we can now begin to compare this to what could happen in the Falcon and The Winter Soldier and start to get a picture of how Wyatt Russell’s portrayal of U.S. Agent will look like.

One of the main themes of the show looks explore America’s history with racial issues as the debut of Walker as the ‘new’ Cap in the show hints that Sam Wilson isn’t the successor chosen by the government. From what we know about Walker the theme of racism seems likely to include Walker and we could see his character following his dismissive manner towards African Americans.

Moreover, with the government or some agency positioning Walker to be the next Captain America, although not fitting with the comics in becoming Cap, it does fit with how Walker works for multiple agencies and groups in the comics. As such the soldier characteristics that Walker has will show up in the upcoming series.

A more violent Captain America would obviously clash with Sam and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) which is what could spark a fight between the two sides. Like the comics it’s likely that the opposing values that Walker has to the traditional ones that Steve used will be explored and cause a clash between each side as the legacy of Captain America is debated.

Something which seems to be making its way into the MCU is a dive into the history of the super soldier serum and how many different governments and agencies have tried to replicate the original. We are not sure whether Walker will be enhanced in the show as he could just be a decorated military fighter, but if he is we expect that the history of the super soldier serums will be explored. How Walker becomes enhanced will likely be a focus of his character if this is a direction the MCU looks to move into.

Sum-Up:

Without question the introduction of John Walker into the MCU is exciting and we cannot wait to see how he fits with his comic book character. Marvel Studios have in the past moved in a completely different direction with characters compared to their comic book origin, Zemo is a perfect example of this. With that being said there are lots of similarities between Walker in the comics which fit with the themes of the trailers and speculation surrounding Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
