WandaVision’s commercials explained

One of the most confusing aspects to WandaVision has been the commercials that have been aired during the sitcom episodes. We have currently seen six commercial to fit with the six decades of sitcoms we have watched. Each commercial is shot in the style of the decade, but what has fans confused is the meaning behind each one. Some fans have speculated that each commercial was a reference to an infinity stone, which still has credibility. However, the meaning behind each commercial is about Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and her past trauma.
Stark Toaster:
During the 50s episode which kicked off the series, the first commercial was promoting the Stark ToastMate 2000 with the catchy line of, “forget the past, this is your future.” Everyone will have been able to spot the obvious reference to Stark Industries but there is a deeper meaning to the advert.
When Wanda was a child a bomb strike hit her family’s apartment and killed everyone but Pietro and herself. The only reason that the twins survived was because one of the bombs which was right next to them did not explode. What was written on the unexploded bomb was Stark Industries, just what was
written on the toaster.
For any person witnessing your family die would be horrifying, but for a 10 year old girl it would have been even worse. This was the moment that the trauma began in Wanda’s life. What makes this horrific event in Wanda’s life relevant to the commercial was the fact the toaster was beeping at an increased speed, like a timer on a bomb ready to explode. Therefore, the commercial is a reference to the start of Wanda’s trauma, which also begins the chronology of each commercial.
Strucker Watch:

Moving into the 60s, we also moved to the next part of Wanda’s trauma. After joining in many protests in Sokovia, Wanda and Pietro signed up for experimental testing by Wolfgang von Strucker. This testing with the mind stone lead to the twins gaining there powers. How this links to Wanda’s trauma is because of the pain that will have been endured during the testing, something which we expect to learn more about in the final 2 episodes of WandaVision.
Using the slogan “Strucker, he will make time for you”, further highlights Wanda’s past. Avengers: Age of Ultron established Wanda and Pietro as Strucker’s focus, so making time for you, is a reference to how Strucker made time for twins while he was experimenting on them.
Hydra Soak:

While being experimented on by Strucker, the twins were part of Hydra. The 3rd commercial is about Hydra bath powder. Linking Hydra to Wanda’s past is simple and is the easy explanation for the commercial, but there is a deeper meaning behind it.
Whether Agents of Shield is cannon or not still is questioned, but the commercial for Hydra Soak does link to that show. In an episode of Agents of Shield, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) talks about Hydra’s mind control soap. Soap and bath powder are both toilet appliances, so the connection between the two is easily made. What is important for the link to Wanda is the mind control aspect. Wanda has the ability to alter people’s minds, which she did to all the Avengers apart from Hawkeye (Jeremey Renner) in Age of Ultron.

This means that the commercial while being a reference to Wanda’s time with Hydra could also link to Wanda’s powers of mind control which she used while fighting the Avengers.
Lagos Brand:

As we move through the decades we also move further with Wanda’s trauma. While working with the Avengers, Wanda accidentally caused 26 civilian casualties in Lagos. Once again the link between a part of Wanda’s trauma and the commercial is easily made. Even the slogan used, “when you make a mess, you didn’t mean to” can be easily linked to how Wanda only accidently caused the casualties when she saved Captain America’s (Chris Evans) life.
Even though this commercial was the easiest to relate to Wanda’s trauma, something else to note is the dripping after the paper towel wipes up the liquid. The dripping continues for a little longer which implies that in Wanda’s mind she keeps spilling blood and cannot control the mess she keep making.
Yo-Magic:

Easily the hardest commercial to dissect, Yo-Magic can be inferred to multiple parts of Wanda’s past. Going hungry and being a survivor links to Wanda’s childhood in the war torn Sokovia. While this works in explaining Wanda’s trauma, it doesn’t fit the chronology of each commercial, which moves to the next aspect of pain Wanda has felt.
As such, the commercial can also be implied to relate to Wanda’s time on the run after Captain America: Civil War. While on the run going hungry and surviving will have been key aspects to this time period. This is definitely the biggest jump to link the commercials with Wanda’s trauma, but it still works with the chronology, which is important for explaining the next commercial.
During the commercial there is also a shark that appears to give the yogurt to the child. The shark could be a metaphor for people above Wanda always giving her orders, while she just wants to live a normal life and be happy.
Nexus:

The final commercial we have seen is the biggest and most intriguing. Promoting anti-depressants is the link to Wanda’s being depressed after the death of Vision, the depression we saw in the ‘Breaking the Fourth Wall’ episode. However, there was so much more in this advert which highlights the powers Wanda has.
Using nexus as the brand for the anti-depressants is the key to understanding the advert. In Marvel comics nexus beings is a term given to certain people whom can control reality. They can also alter these realities which can cause problems across the multiverse and time stream. Wanda is one of these beings!
Therefore the commercial using nexus anti-depressants links to how Wanda is using her powers of a nexus being to help her depression. Also, the commercial mentions potential side effects which include, “feeling your feelings, confronting your truth, seizing your destiny and possibly more depression”. Key note here is that the side effects have not fully been on display by Wanda yet. The main side effect we haven’t seen to its full extent is the “seizing your destiny”. This could be foreshadowing Wanda finally fully controlling her powers.

Moreover, a key line was that “you should not take nexus unless your doctor has cleared you”. The only Doctor that we know is Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Wanda is also set to star alongside in Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which once again means that the commercial is foreshadowing things to come.
This commercial opens up a wide array of possibilities and allows for fans imagination to go wild.
Review:

It is clear throughout WandaVision that each commercial is a reference to Wanda’s past. However, if we look at each commercial being in chronological order, then we get a better understanding of what Wanda is going through. This also allows for us to speculate what will happen next. The final commercial is paramount to this as it references nexus which has never been brought up in the MCU before.
Despite there being foreshadowing with the latest commercial, the main aspect of each commercial through the decades is to tell the story of Wanda’s trauma throughout her life.
