After the death of Vision (Paul Bettany) in Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) has been on a downward spiral with her grief consuming her. Disney+ exclusive series, WandaVision has presented Wanda as the villain, where she has consumed and is controlling a town to act how she sees fit. This hasn’t been completely proven yet but if it does come to be true then no power could stop Wanda. Instead it could be love!

Wanda gave birth to twins, Billy and Tommy in episode 3 and during episode 5 we see them age to 10. Throughout the episode we watch Wanda care for the twins and even try using her powers to get them to sleep without success. The fact Wanda cannot control her twins, creates a human relationship between the twins and their mother. Wanda will be forced to be a real parent with no tricks, and we saw what this looked like during episode 5 when Wanda taught the twins a lesson about grief. Despite being hypocritical during the lesson Wanda taught her children, this moment could see the beginning of Wanda herself coming to terms with her grief and that is down to her becoming a mother.

During episode 5 when Wanda leaves Westview and confronts S.W.O.R.D. we witnessed the villainous side of Wanda, a side we haven’t seen since Avengers: Age of Ultron. Despite this scene showing the side of Wanda that the series has been building to, the very next scene in Westview switches Wanda back to a caring and loving mother. The twins and Wanda look for the dog Sparky, whom is found dead by Agnes after he ate some of her azalea bushes leaves. This devastating news caused the twins to cry and begin to think about ageing up once again. Concerned mother Wanda was forced to act and teach Billy and Tommy a lesson on how to deal with their grief. Wanda says, “Don’t age yourself up. The urge to run from this feeling is powerful”. Wanda telling her children this is hypocritical because it is the exact thing she has done to avoid accepting the death of Vision.

The lesson Wanda teaches her children continues as she contradicts everything she has done. Wanda tells the twins that “there are rules in life”. She also says that “we can’t reverse death. No matter how sad that makes us. Some things are forever.” Everything Wanda says to her children to teach them about death is the complete opposite what she has done. Wanda has broken rules in life by bringing Vision back to life because she couldn’t deal with a life without him.

However, what is key to the scene in understanding how Wanda feels, are the facial expressions she expresses. When speaking to her children Wanda seems to have a revelation that everything she has been doing is wrong. She is teaching her children the difference of what is right from wrong like every mother would do, and the fact that she doesn’t follow her own teachings has an effect on her. We know Wanda cannot control the twins like everyone else so she couldn’t just cut away or change their thoughts, rather she has to deal with what her children are saying. For the first time Wanda has to listen to what someone is saying when she may not want to. This will mature her and everything she has said will start to come to the surface in her own thoughts, which could lead to Wanda finally accepting her grief.

WandaVision has explored the grief of Wanda after the death of Vision. For the most part we have seen Wanda deny the fact that her lover has died, while we also have seen bursts of anger. Both traits are a part of the grieving process. However, with the introduction of the twins, Wanda has been forced to mature as a mother. With this maturity Wanda, has begun to be forced to accept her grief. She hasn’t fully accepted the grief yet as Westview’s reality still exists but as Wanda matures as a person and a mother we can expect her grief to settle down. That being said this is the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we are still in store for some shocks which could cause Wanda to deviate from her path, but she has definitely started on the road to acceptance of her grief.
