Haywood’s secret and the Cataract file explained

After the shocking expansion of the Hex in the latest episode of WandaVision fans are expecting the secrets of Westview to begin to reveal themselves in the final 3 episodes. One of the secrets which has been discovered by Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) is set to expose what Director Haywood (Josh Stamberg) and the S.W.O.R.D. organisation have been covering up, a cover up that Haywood has been trying to keep hidden throughout the series. We got a glimpse of what Darcy discovered with the file name ‘CATARACT’ on display. Before Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) used her powers to expand the Hex and save Vision (Paul Bettany), Darcy managed to send the file to the lovable Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) whom managed to escape from the Hex’s extension along with Monica (Teyonah Paris). With Haywood’s secret file being sent to Jimmy and Monica and the discovery of more shady secrets, we can expect the pair to expose what he has been doing.

Haywood and his secrets:

Since fans were introduced to Director Haywood in episode 4 nobody has trusted him. The downfall of his relationship with Monica reached its peak during episode 6 and it’s clearer than ever before that Haywood is hiding something. If we take a look back at the actions of Haywood during episode 5, he acts like a dictator by overruling Monica. The incident in question is when Haywood ordered a drone attack on Wanda instead of talking with her like Monica originally planned. An action like this is not only reckless but shows a lack of cooperation, not traits that we put with a strong leader. Monica brings this up with Haywood in the latest episode, which causes the two to have a tense confrontation. Ultimately Haywood orders Monica, along with Jimmy and Darcy to be removed from the base. Once again Haywood uses his power to make a decision which makes him look more like a dictator than a director.

Actions from Haywood have been rash and he seems to be panicking which begs the question as to why he has taken these decisions. Firstly ordering to take out Wanda was not a thought out plan and was an action to try and remove the threat as quickly as possible. It is never wise to provoke a threat like this and the risk of consequences outweighed the potential success. A director taking a risk like this clearly shows there is something else at stake for him. If Haywood had no ulterior motives then containing the threat like Monica had planned would be the natural action; ordering a drone attack is not what a director would order because of the potential risk it has. Haywood endangered countless number of people which tends to only be done when something bigger is at stake.

Removing Monica, Jimmy and Darcy from the base is also a clear example of how Haywood is covering something up. Monica is the only person with first person insight from the hex, Darcy managed to gain footage from inside the Hex and Jimmy was the one who discovered Westview. Therefore, removing these 3 people from the base is not going to help in solving the problem; instead it is reducing your chances. The only reason for Haywood to remove them from the base is because they are likely to uncover what he is hiding. So from what Haywood has done its clear he has a secret about something with Westview and he will do anything to stop it from getting out.

Also, Monica concludes that Haywood is keeping a secret. Monica and Jimmy break themselves and Darcy free and Monica says Haywood is “up to something”. Avoiding detection, the 3 of them then manage to gain access to S.W.O.R.D. files through Darcy hacking their systems. What is uncovered from the files shows Haywood has been covering something up, but the extent of the cover up hasn’t yet been revealed to us.

What we do know thanks to Darcy is that Haywood has been able to track Vision and that he would have an accurate headcount of how many people are in Westview. Once again Haywood is not helping to solve the problem. You would think that this information would be shared with the group to increase the chances of solving the Westview anomaly. Rather, Haywood has kept this file a secret which once again begs the question why.

Monica’s medical is also discovered by Darcy. Shockingly we find out that Monica’s cells are being rewritten at a molecular level. Clearly this is the origin of how Monica will develop her comic book powers, but in terms of Haywood, we have to think he will have seen this. If we assume he has seen the medical, then once again their evidence that Haywood is covering something up, as you would expect the first person he would share this with would be Monica.

What is Cataract file?

After what is discovered, Jimmy and Monica leave the base to meet up with Monica’s aerospace engineer while Darcy stays to continue hacking into S.W.O.R.D. While Darcy stays she discovers the file ‘CATARACK’ that she finds in Haywood’s personal files. Moreover the file name says that it is Classified Weapon Intel, which is something Haywood referenced to Monica in episode 4. However what is the reason for this information to be classified and for Darcy tom immediately send it to Jimmy. This is where theories start to mount about what the file contains, but one thing is for clear that the file will be of high importance in discovering what S.W.O.R.D. and Haywood has been doing.

When we look at what Cataract actually means, it is a cloudy part of the eye, which if develops can lead to decreased vision. Interestingly the physical effects of someone with a cataract include the eye becoming cloudy with no pupil on display. This is the same effect that was seen on Vision’s corpse in episode 4. This alone would not be enough to make the assumption the file is about Vision. However, when you add the fact Haywood can track Vision and the footage of Wanda stealing Vision, which included scientists working on the corpse, then the suggestion that the file relates to Vision could be true.

Evidence does suggest that the file is relating to Vision but what is being done to him cannot be proven. I think that the Haywood and S.W.O.R.D. have been trying to turn Vision into a form of weapon which would fit with the change of name S.W.O.R.D. has had. Also, this would break the wishes of the Vision and thus explain why Haywood wants to keep what he is doing a secret as there is a risk he would lose everything. There are still many other theories about the file, but the evidence strongly suggests that S.W.O.R.D. has been illegally working on Vision.

With the secrets of S.W.O.R.D. and Haywood finally coming to the surface we expect in the coming episodes that the full level of the secrets will be exposed. With the Hex expanding and engulfing the S.W.O.R.D. base, Haywood has lost a lot of his power which will allow for Monica to take more control, even if Haywood opposes her. No matter what happens next the CATARACK file that Jimmy has received from Darcy will be important to the plot and when we discover its contents we expect to be shocked.
