Avengers: Endgame ended with the famous scene of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) finally having that dance. This left the current MCU timeline without a Captain America. Marvel’s 2nd Disney+ exclusive show, Falcon and The Winter Soldier will deal with the aftermath of a world with no Steve Rogers as Captain America. References to Cap will appear throughout the show and once the series has finished everyone will be saying it felt like a Captain America movie, probably because we will have a new Cap.

Both Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) have appeared in the Captain America trilogy and have become close allies to the first avenger. Neither character has actually had their own hero story showcased so immediately when you think of the characters you think of Captain America. The return of Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) further highlights the similarities to Captain America movies as they both have appeared in them as well. Zemo in fact was the villain of Captain America: Civil War and played a major role in disbanding the original Avengers. When looking at the cast everyone has links to Captain America and his movies which is why the series will make you feel like you are watching the 4th instalment of the Captain America series.
Moreover we have never seen Falcon or The Winter Soldier undertake missions without Captain America. Falcon was always Cap’s left hand man and The Winter Soldier was only called upon for desperate times due to his unstable mind. This means that we haven’t been introduced to either of the shows leading character as an actual leader; they have always followed Captain America. This does make the upcoming series exciting as we will get to see what Falcon and The Winter Soldier are like when they are the ones in charge of the missions. From the trailers it looks like the pair will clash on numerous occasions which will be exciting to watch.

The clash between the leading characters could also result in a battle for the famous Vibranium shield. We have seen both yield the shield in the trailers and the fact the legacy of the shield is being brought up does indicate that either Falcon or The Winter Soldier will take up the mantle of Captain America. We have seen U.S. Agent, John Walker in the trailer wielding the shield but we do not expect him to continue carrying it after the series ends. Instead what the show seems to be building to, is Falcon taking up the mantle like he did in ‘All-New Captain America’ in the comics.
Villain of the series, Zemo was last seen imprisoned at the end of Captain America: Civil War. We know from the trailers that he will have escaped. We also know his mission is to eradicate superheroes, which follows on from what he started in Civil War. This once again shows that the series will continue the story Captain America began. The Winter Soldier and Falcon played big roles in Civil War which is why the series doesn’t feel like its own project; instead it feels like a continuation of the Captain America story, especially if you treat Captain America as a mantle rather than Steve Rogers.

Anticipation is building for the Falcon and The Winter Soldier and we expect it to deliver. The series definitely feels like a Captain America style story, but instead we have Falcon and The Winter Soldier taking the challenge on. Instead of Cap being the lead he is replaced by his two best friends which not only will provide a funny dynamic between the two but it will also continue the Captain America story that didn’t just end with old man Cap in Avengers: Endgame. Instead the story of Captain America as a mantle is just starting and will be expected to evolve throughout the series and the MCU.
